Frequently Asked Questions
WHY DO I NEED TO HIRE SOMEONE TO TAKE EVERY DAY PICTURES?
Because your wedding isn't the only day worth remembering. Like most people, you probably spent years planning and saving for a professional to document one of the most important days of your life. But your happily ever after ever isn't over yet! Your happily ever after is happening right now and it's worth documenting. Who you are and what you do is important. Weddings, anniversaries, pregnancies, births, birthdays, family reunions, vacations, or any given Tuesday all deserve to be celebrated in the same way as your wedding day.
WHY "ORDINARY, EVERY DAY" PICTURES? CAN'T I GET REGULAR PORTRAITS?
Everyone loves a good family portrait for Grandma's wall and their annual Christmas cards. If desired, we can dedicate a small portion of our time together for formal portraits. However, in my experience, the images that you will love the most are those that reflect the unscripted moments that truly reflect who you are and what your life is really like. Your family's connections, moments, relationships, and emotions are more important than eye contact and a smile.
WHAT IS "DOCUMENTARY" PHOTOGRAPHY?
Documentary photography is unscripted, unplanned, storytelling, reflective of reality, and emotive. I don't stop for tantrums or tears, and I never force a child to look at me and smile.
There is a growing debate about what is and is not "documentary" vs "lifestyle" vs "photojournalism". I'm not a purist of any of those categories and tend to use whatever approach makes my clients the most comfortable. Ultimately you are more concerned about the art we make together than whether my technique will win me an award for photojournalism.. You don't care if I open windows, turn on lights, or use a flash. That stuff doesn't matter to the average family. What matters is those special moments and the relationships with the people you love.
Together we will plan an experience, and I will be there to document that experience as it happens naturally. At the beginning of shorter sessions, to help my clients relax, I may make suggestions to encourage natural interactions, but by the end of our time together, everything is organic and unscripted. Day in the Life sessions usually start off unscripted and organic because Mom and Dad don't have time to pose when they are making breakfast and getting kids ready for the day.
THIS SOUNDS GREAT! I JUST NEED TO LOSE A FEW MORE POUNDS.
A special note to my fellow wives, mothers, and daughters: You are adored. The people in your life love you for who you are. Photographs of you are a cherished gift to your loved ones! Your children, spouse, and parents deserve to have pictures of you in all of your perfect imperfection. When your children and grandchildren are looking through your photo album, they will want to see you as are today and learn from your life's story. Share it with them!
I understand your desire to look and feel your best. But don't wait! You are beautiful the way you are. Your home is wonderful the way it is. Don't wait until it's too late to document your life as it is right now. Your happily ever after is now. Don't let it slip away into your fading memory. No one's story is happy and perfect all the time and that's ok. Happy moments, stressful moments, sad moments, exciting moments... they are all part of your story. Before you know it, another year will have gone by and the only pictures you will have to show for it are snapshots that you have shared online.
Why do we need to have a consultation?
Documentary photography is not one size fits all. Your family is special. In order to give you the very best experience possible, we need to speak and discuss all of your artistic needs, personal style, expectations, and studio policies.
Can I have the files and edit them myself?
No. I do not share uncompleted work. When Michelangelo was hired to paint the Sistine Chapel, he didn't just hand over his paints and brushes. He stayed until the job was done. 500 years later we continue to enjoy his legacy. I'm no Michelangelo, but I am an artist, and your family history deserves to be preserved with the same care and attention to detail. My job isn't done until you have an heirloom quality album in your hand and a piece of museum quality art on your wall.
CAN I GET DIGITAL FILES?
Yes! Completed, high resolution digital jpegs are available for purchase. They, and the print release that comes with them, are the most valuable products that I offer. In order to protect the artistic integrity of our time together, and to ensure that you are able to enjoy your art to the fullest, they are available and priced accordingly.
What can I expect at a photo session?
Whether I'm spending the entire day with you or just a few hours, we can plan it all during our consultation. For shorter sessions, I usually suggest an activity that your family typically enjoys together (ice cream party, frisbee in the park, baking cookies, roasting marshmallows, apple picking, a family walk, game night, etc). Longer sessions are more relaxed and include every day activities as well (meals, cuddle time, grocery shopping, bed time, and everything in between). The world is your oyster!
But the most important thing is I want you to relax and be yourself. I never force anyone to look at the camera and smile. I just want you and your family the way you are.
